Dr. Miriam Smetak is a UCI Health otolaryngologist specializing in the medical and surgical management of disorders of the ear and temporal bone. Her clinical practice focuses on hearing loss, chronic ear disease including cholesteatoma, and skull base tumors including acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma). Dr. Smetak earned dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Southern California in aerospace engineering and archeology. She then went on to obtain her medical degree and a concurrent master of science in biomedical engineering from the University of Minnesota. She completed her residency training in otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in otology & neurotology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Smetak is also engaged in research centered on medical device design and development, image guided surgery, and surgical ergonomics.
